Most of us set some form of New years resolutions after the holidays; whether we call them resolutions, goals or intentions. I'm not different, after the holidays are over and the celebrations have died down, I take some time to consider what I want for the upcoming year. I try to take a balanced approach, spreading out my goals between physical health, my relationships and my professional goals. The image for this blog was taken in 2021, I was setting my goals for 2022, midway through COVID and starting to put the first steps towards creating a book of my travels during COVID restrictions where the only thing I was able to do was travel into the back-country. That year marked a turning point for my photography; I was taking side jobs doing portraits and had been for quite a few years, but I created my new Instagram that year and began laying the groundwork for a photography business. in Grande Prairie.

In 2022 I photographed my first few weddings and fell in love with the process. I found so much joy in photographing a celebration of love and connection and began considering making it a bigger part of my then side hustle. In the following years, I photographed more weddings, family sessions and portraits, along with exploring sports and other forms of photography. In July of 2024 I was confident in the direction I wanted to take my business, I officially registered my business on August 1st of 2024 and committed to begin operating it as a creative business rather than a side hustle.

The second half of 2024 was one of the most rewarding, and busiest periods of photography I have experienced. The biggest change I made was marketing, putting my name out there and looking for work, in comparison to taking "random" jobs as they came in from word of mouth. I hosted my first styled shoot weekend, photography 12 sessions in the mountains over a day and a half and creating new images of the type of work I want to photograph.

At this point, you're probably wondering what goals I've set for 2025, where all this is going and why I'm writing out a fairly long post that isn't likely to be read through on platforms designed for images, video and quick content. I set a few goals for this year, some with specific financial benchmarks but generally, they all follow the same trend. I intend to grow my business actively, creating opportunities that will allow me to spend more time photographing the things I love and telling people's stories, capturing emotions and snapshots of a person's life.

Setting Intentions for 2025

If you were to ask me to describe my perfect weekend, this past one would be it. It was by far the busiest I've ever had with portrait sessions, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I had the pleasure of conducting eight separate shoots across six different locations, resulting in a little over 1800 photos that I now have the joy of sorting through.Being a Grande Prairie family and wedding photographer, the opportunity to meet so many beautiful families and couples is the highlight of my profession. This weekend, in particular, was a testament to how privileged I am to be able to do this creative work professionally. I was taken aback by the love and warmth radiating from each family and couple I had the chance to photograph.In an attempt to make the most of this trip, I decided to add some landscapes into the mix as well. While I often focus on capturing the essence of people, there's something to be said about the tranquillity that emanates from a well-framed landscape shot. The mountains of Grande Cache served as the perfect backdrop for these, adding to the richness of the weekend's portfolio.What added to the overall excitement of the weekend was a brief camping trip. It was not just about getting the perfect shots, but also about immersing myself in the beauty of nature, taking in the serene surroundings, and drawing inspiration for my work. The trip served as a reminder of why I love what I do and how fortunate I am to be able to combine my passion for photography with my love for the outdoors.In all, this weekend was a brilliant fusion of work and play that I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved having the creative freedom to travel into the mountains of Grande Cache to do a series of creative fall shoots with my clients. Each shoot was unique and special in its own way, and I can't wait to share these beautiful memories with everyone. Looking back, I'm grateful for this flurry of a weekend - for the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, for the beautiful locations I was able to travel to, and most importantly, for being able to do what I love most.
