Most of us set some form of New years resolutions after the holidays; whether we call them resolutions, goals or intentions. I'm not different, after the holidays are over and the celebrations have died down, I take some time to consider what I want for the upcoming year. I try to take a balanced approach, spreading out my goals between physical health, my relationships and my professional goals. The image for this blog was taken in 2021, I was setting my goals for 2022, midway through COVID and starting to put the first steps towards creating a book of my travels during COVID restrictions where the only thing I was able to do was travel into the back-country. That year marked a turning point for my photography; I was taking side jobs doing portraits and had been for quite a few years, but I created my new Instagram that year and began laying the groundwork for a photography business. in Grande Prairie.

In 2022 I photographed my first few weddings and fell in love with the process. I found so much joy in photographing a celebration of love and connection and began considering making it a bigger part of my then side hustle. In the following years, I photographed more weddings, family sessions and portraits, along with exploring sports and other forms of photography. In July of 2024 I was confident in the direction I wanted to take my business, I officially registered my business on August 1st of 2024 and committed to begin operating it as a creative business rather than a side hustle.

The second half of 2024 was one of the most rewarding, and busiest periods of photography I have experienced. The biggest change I made was marketing, putting my name out there and looking for work, in comparison to taking "random" jobs as they came in from word of mouth. I hosted my first styled shoot weekend, photography 12 sessions in the mountains over a day and a half and creating new images of the type of work I want to photograph.

At this point, you're probably wondering what goals I've set for 2025, where all this is going and why I'm writing out a fairly long post that isn't likely to be read through on platforms designed for images, video and quick content. I set a few goals for this year, some with specific financial benchmarks but generally, they all follow the same trend. I intend to grow my business actively, creating opportunities that will allow me to spend more time photographing the things I love and telling people's stories, capturing emotions and snapshots of a person's life.

I realized early on that the best thing about memories is making them, and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart and captured through my lens.

Once we have our family poses locked in, I love giving the kids, and even parents, the liberty to run, play, climb, and be silly. Because I firmly believe that you cannot replicate the genuine smile and laughter that comes from these candid moments in any posed image.

This approach also makes my sessions a lot more fun! I vividly remember going to a box store for my annual photos as a kid, sitting in uncomfortable clothes and awkward poses, impatiently waiting for it to be over.
